Bringing Sustainability Into the Bedroom:

"The bedroom is the place where you can be yourself, so make it a reflection of who you are and what you love." - Nate Berkus

We spend about one-third of our life either sleeping or trying to doze off. That’s a lot of time spent snoozing and, let’s face it, the naps are only increasing as we get older.

While we’ve found that people are very conscious about buying products which are planet-friendly in lots of aspects of their lives (like avoiding fast fashion, ditching single-use plastic and generally eating less meat), going green when it comes to sleep still isn’t something that’s very high on the priority list for lots of people, despite sleep being such a massive part of our lives.

What is sustainable bedding?

When we talk about sustainable bedding, we mean bedding that’s been made from eco-friendly, organic, or recycled materials that are made using environmentally conscious manufacturing practices.

These practices include the use of sustainable materials, utilising energy-efficient technology, reducing waste in the process, and recycling & reusing materials. It can also mean using renewable energy sources, designing products with minimal packaging, reducing the use of water and toxic chemicals, and implementing closed-loop manufacturing processes that minimise waste & max out the efficiency of your resources.

So Why People Aren’t Picking Up Sustainable Bedding.

There are a few main reasons we’ve picked out from chatting to people as to why they aren’t quite ready to make the switch to more sustainable bedding.

  1. Lack of awareness: Many people might  not even know that sustainable bedding options exist or the benefits of using them. Without this knowledge, they might not actively seek out sustainable bedding options and just go for whatever’s most convenient instead.
  2. Availability and accessibility: Sustainable bedding isn’t as widely available or accessible as other bedding options, making it trickier for people to get their hands on it.
  3. Price: Sustainable bedding options might be more expensive due to the processes used to make them, making them less accessible in the short-term for people on a budget.
  4. Quality perception: People might assume that sustainable bedding options are lower quality or less comfortable than traditional bedding because of sustainable materials they’ve experienced in the past which they saw as rougher.

Why It Makes Sense to Switch to Sustainable Bedding

There are loads of reasons to get your hands on some sustainable bedding that cancel out any perceptions you might have picked up, or previously not thinking it was worth it.

  1. Environmental benefits: Sustainable bedding helps reduce the negative impact on the environment by minimising the use of non-renewable resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and decreasing waste in landfills.
  2. Health benefits: Sustainable bedding is made from materials that are free of harmful chemicals and pesticides, making them safer and healthier for people with allergies and who are sensitive to different chemicals.
  3. Comfort: Sustainable bedding is typically made from natural materials (such as Tencel, the natural material we use at Kuroa for all our bedding) which are known for their softness, durability, and breathability. This makes them more comfortable to sleep on than synthetic materials.
  4. Ethical considerations: Sustainable bedding is often produced using fair trade practices that prioritise worker safety and fair wages, which can help support ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices.

How do we at Kuroa make our bedding sustainable?

At Kuroa, we bring together the best low-impact material science with timeless style. Our products are designed to be better for you, your home and our planet.

We make all our bedding out of a fabric called Tencel. Tencel is made from the wood and cellulose of sustainably harvested Eucalyptus trees (a tree which grows quickly without the need of irrigation, pesticides or fertilisers) making it better for the planet than other commonly used materials. We choose 100% Tencel fabrics made from FSC-accredited trees exclusively by partners at Lenzing, with circulatory at the heart of everything we do.

It’s more durable than cotton and linen, as well as more breathable, making it the perfect material to create beautiful low-impact bedding that lasts.

In all aspects of our products, we use materials with the lowest possible environmental footprint. Our labels, our elastics and our buttons are all made from recycled materials. Our packaging is plastic-free, and, when our products reach the end of their life, our natural mono-fibre Tencel is easy to recycle and completely biodegradable.

We always use high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship, so our bedding should give you years of satisfaction and enjoyment. But if it does go through any wear and tear and needs a little bit of extra attention, you can send it over to us and we’ll happily give it a new lease of life. A lost button or loose thread should never be the end.

When it comes to our company as a whole, the days of profit before anything else are over. We’re on the road to becoming a B Corp already and, as a B Corp, it’s a legally binding requirement to look after people and the environment. We want to make that commitment and embed sustainability in the fibre of how we do business.

We’re proud members of 1% of the planet, which commits us to give 1% of our revenues to environmental projects worldwide. We think of it as a planet tax, and we are happy to pay our dues.

You deserve the best and so does the planet. By choosing sustainable bedding, you can sleep comfortably while also helping to protect the environment and support ethical manufacturing practices that help people love better lives. A win for the planet, a win for people and a win for your sleep satisfaction.
